common microaggressions toward native americans to avoid: 1. saying something or someone is your "spirit animal."
Spirit Animals, Animal Guides, and Spirit Helpers are all spiritual terms various Indigenous cultures use to describe benevolent spirits. The term describes something sacred and religious — It doesn’t just mean you identify with or relate to something.
Read more about the misconceptions, microaggressions, stereotypes, and racism that indigenous people continue to endure in the 2018 TeenVogue article How Racism Against Native People Is Normalized, From Mascots to Costumes by Heather Davidson.

Coming Together for Transgender Awareness:
A Week of Action, Celebration, and Remembrance

transgender person holding a sign reading "Trans rights are human rights"

From GLAAD.org: The week before Transgender Day of Remembrance on November 20, people and organizations around the country participate in Transgender Awareness Week to help raise the visibility of transgender people and address issues members of the community face.

Transgender Day of Remembrance (TDOR), is an annual observance on November 20 that honors the memory of the transgender people whose lives were lost in acts of anti-transgender violence that year.

What is Transgender Awareness Week?

Transgender Awareness Week is a week when transgender people and their allies take action to bring attention to the community by educating the public about who transgender people are, sharing stories and experiences, and advancing advocacy around the issues of prejudice, discrimination, and violence that affect the transgender community.

What is Transgender Day of Remembrance?

Transgender Day of Remembrance (TDOR) was founded by transgender advocate Gwendolyn Ann Smith as a vigil to honor her memory of Rita Hester, a transgender woman who was killed in 1998. The vigil commemorated all the transgender people lost to violence that year and began an important memorial that has become the annual Transgender Day of Remembrance.

Participate in TDOR by attending or organizing a vigil on November 20th to honor all those whose lives were lost to anti-transgender violence that year.  Vigils are typically hosted by local transgender advocates or LGBTQ organizations and held at community centers, parks, places of worship, and other venues. The vigil often involves reading a list of the names of those who died that year.

Learn more about Transgender Awareness Week and what you can do to participate and help raise awareness for transgender rights by visiting GLAAD.org/transweek.

From PFLAG: While transgender representation has too often tended to range from nonexistent to dismal, this isn’t and hasn’t always been the case. The films below include both narratives and documentaries that explore many facets of the trans experience.

Giving Tuesday: Help a Coastline Student Reach their Goal

GIVING-TUESDAY

Giving Tuesday is a global movement built by individuals, families, organizations, and communities, who come together to participate in 24 hours of unprecedented nonprofit giving. It is an opportunity for people around the world to come together to thank, help, give, show kindness, and share what they have with those in need. It's your chance to make a real difference, right here in our own community.

On Tuesday, November 30th, Coastline College is participating in #GivingTuesday, and would like to invite community members, alumni and employees and to contribute to and support students in need.

Coastline students continue to be affected by the economic impact of COVID-19. Vulnerable students need financial assistance for food, rent, basic necessities, childcare, textbooks, tuition and more. Your donation, on Giving Tuesday, can help these students stay on track to empower their lives and enable them to make a difference in our communities.

Last Day!
In the Coastline Gallery: Space, Time | Repeat

Join the Coastline Art Gallery for their latest virtual exhibition, the first of the 2021-2022 school year!

For this series of virtual exhibitions, we have reached out to members of the community, all of which have been engaged in art-making for quite some time. This first collection of five artists all work within their genre to express thoughts on a variety of subject matters through the medium of paint and sculpture. From abstraction through realism, into non-representational art, each artists' expression is true to their vision for their own space and time. You will discover that art can transport you to the past while being provocatively suggestive through simplicity, detritus reassembled can once again creep through your life, overlooked aspects of landscape are once again highlighted, and quite often ART can transport you into the realm of abstraction. Read more on the Coastline Art Gallery Blog.

Today is the last day of the exhibition, so be sure to check it out before it ends!

commo microaggressions toward native americans to avoid: 2. calling a meeting or get-together a "pow-wow."
Pow-wows are significant celebrations in many Indigenous communities that allow people in the tribe to feel a sense of community and to honor their heritage in a society that often marginalizes them. At these events, people dance, sing, socialize and celebrate their culture. An impromptu chat at the watercooler is not a “pow-wow.” Real pow-wows require significant planning.

Careers In the Headlines:
Supply Chain Management

If you live anywhere near the Los Angeles coast, you are no stranger to the field of ships dotting the shoreline as they wait to enter the clogged Port of Los Angeles.  There are also two words that you more than likely have read over and over: Supply Chain.  But what is Supply Chain Management and WHY is it such an issue right now?  More importantly - what can YOU do to be part of the solution?

Logistics/Supply Chain Management involves every aspect of purchasing, transportation, storage, and distribution of goods from manufacturers to consumers. Did you know that students with a two-year degree in the supply chain field earn, on average, over $77,000/year? Candidates with four-year degrees in supply chain management fields average over $126,000/year.

Through special funding, Coastline students can now join the premier supply chain management association, CSCMP, for free! This membership is a $40/year value, brought to you by Strong Workforce Program funding, Powered by California Community Colleges. This membership is provided to you because companies are desperately seeking students with supply chain management education and experience.

As a CSCMP student member, through the Southern California Roundtable, you gain access to networking with local employers, opportunities to tour companies, and chances to learn more about the many roles, jobs, and industries that are part of Supply Chain Management.

Contact Erin Thomas, Associate Business Professor, Coastline College, to obtain membership and conference registration instructions, and to answer any questions.

common microaggressions toward native americans to avoid: 3. using the figure of speech "low man on the totem pole."
Again, totem poles have religious and cultural significance to many tribes in the Northwest. These carvings portray stories of lineage, mythology, and important events. Totem poles are symbols of prestige in a community. Often, the figure portrayed at the bottom is the most significant.

Coastline Smash Tournament Recap 2021

By Max Lamare

Esports concept graphic

Coastline Esports Club held a Smash Tournament over Halloween Weekend! Superb Competition took place between the players and was fantastic viewing for spectators.

Coastline esports held an awesome SMASH tournament at its Westminster campus over the past weekend. This tournament was held in the classic round robin style. A Round Robin tournament is a competition in which each contestant meets all other contestants in turn. This gives the players a chance to fight their opponents and friends multiple times within the tournament. Fans get the pleasure of viewing excellent matchups and the occasional upset by various players. As I was both a fan and a player in the tournament, the atmosphere inside of the event was both electric and intense. Just like a regular sporting event, the crowd gathered to cheer on our esport athletes as they went to battle with each other. At this event, we had our own shoutcaster giving us the play-by-play. In fact, he’s a Coastline student, and he goes by the screen name JayLunatic. Jay is an excellent shoutcaster with tons of energy and enthusiasm. I hope to see him shoutcasting professional esports events someday. We also had a giant -- I mean seriously huge -- projector screen for spectators. The tournament was also being streamed on our Twitch channel for people at home to watch.

Stay tuned to coastline.edu/esports for exciting news, events, and all things esports!

common microaggressions toward native americans to avoid: 4. calling someone an "indian giver."
This figure of speech, which refers to someone giving someone a gift and then taking it away, is derogatory — and not factual. Ironically, it was the U.S. government who redistributed stolen Native American land to them and then continued to usurp it in violation of treaties.
Read more about the misconceptions, microaggressions, stereotypes, and racism that indigenous people endure in the 2018 TeenVogue article How Racism Against Native People Is Normalized, From Mascots to Costumes by Heather Davidson.
