5 Benefits of a Hybrid College Experience
By Saul Rubin
If you want college to be in the cards, it doesn’t hurt to think about starting at a community college and transferring. Here’s why…
Coastline's Transfer Center:
Helping You On Your Way to Your Next Step
The Transfer Center guides students through the transfer process to apply at 4-year universities. The center supports students’ transfer goals with research on selecting majors, schools, transfer tools, help with the CSU, UC, and Private CA University applications, college fairs, virtual tours, transfer workshops, and networking with university counselors and representatives.
To get started on the transfer track, contact us by email or give us a text or call for one-on-one appointments!
Upcoming Event:
Virtual Mega Transfer College Fair
Coastline transfer-bound students can meet and network with representatives from the CSU, UC, and California Independent Colleges and Universities. Register for this one virtual fair space that gives you access to a wide variety of schools (that could not be possible with a site-based fair).
Get the details on your major + career goals, scholarships, financial aid, paid internships, and housing (including family housing) to determine 'good-fit' universities.
Choose 1, 2, or all 3 fair dates to attend:
Tuesday, October 12th
12:00pm - 2:30pm (PST)
Wednesday, Oct. 13th
5:00pm - 7:00pm (PST)
Thursday, Oct. 14th
12:00pm - 2:30pm (PST)
A.A. or A.S. for Transfer Degree Programs:
Guarantee Your Spot at a Cal State While Getting a Coastline Education!
California Community College students who receive an Associate Degree for Transfer are eligible for admission with junior standing into the California State University (CSU) system. Coastline also has Transfer Admission Guarantee (TAG) agreements with UC Davis, UC Irvine, UC Merced, UC Santa Barbara, UC Santa Cruz, and UC Riverside. By participating in a Transfer Admission Guarantee program, students receive early review of their academic records, early admission notification, and specific guidance about major preparation and general education coursework. Learn more on the Transfer Articulation page! Check out two of the many A.A. or A.S. for Transfer Degrees offered at Coastline!
A.S. in Business Administration For Transfer
A.A. in Communication Studies For Transfer
Wondering if transferring is for you? Stop by the Transfer Center for assistance!

To ensure that the transfer process works properly, plan in advance for you transition from community college to a university. By planning ahead, you can prepare for the next steps. Start to collect transfer materials early on and find out if there are any transfer agreements between where you are and where you want to go. The earlier you begin to prepare for transfer and the more information that you have, the easier it will be to decide. It’s better to have an indefinite plan, even if it changes, than no plan at all.

Career Spotlight: Supply Chain Management
Logistics/Supply Chain Management involves every aspect of purchasing, transportation, storage, and distribution of goods from manufacturers to consumers. Did you know that students with a two-year degree in the supply chain field earn, on average, over $77,000/year? Candidates with four-year degrees in supply chain management fields average over $126,000/year.
Through special funding, Coastline students can now join the premier supply chain management association, CSCMP, for free. This membership is a $40/year value, brought to you by Strong Workforce Program funding, Powered by California Community Colleges. This membership is provided to you because companies are desperately seeking students with supply chain management education and experience.
As a CSCMP student member, through the Southern California Roundtable, you gain access to networking with local employers, opportunities to tour companies, and chances to learn more about the many roles, jobs, and industries that are part of Supply Chain Management.
Contact Erin Thomas, Associate Business Professor, Coastline College, to obtain membership and conference registration instructions, and to answer any questions.

One of the benefits of going to community college is exploring your areas of interest at a more cost-effective school, but with that said you shouldn’t delay deciding on a major. When you know what major you are interested in, it will benefit you to know what classes to choose and figure out what classes are not transferable. Not only can you get general education courses out of the way at a fraction of the cost, but you can also start taking some prerequisites that you might need for your desired program at a university.

Even if you obtain plenty of general info about a university, your transfer research shouldn’t stop there. If you have any questions regarding your situation, it pays off to contact the university you are considering directly. Deadlines for submitting admission applications are spread across the year, so be sure to find out all the key deadlines for the university you’ll be attending and add them to your calendar, so you have plenty of time to meet them.
How-To Time: Job Interview Dress Codes
By Saul Rubin
Fashion Month has just concluded (Sept. 14 – Oct. 6) and that’s too bad. There’s really nothing better, in this writer’s obviously biased opinion, then watching showcases of luxuriant and out there fashions. We saw highlights from Loewe, subverting said luxury with a bit of a wink and some very bubbly looking garms; on a separate note, we also had the privilege (not really) of witnessing a sneaker collaboration between Cole Haan (the folks who make the dress shoes you get at the mall) and workplace messaging company Slack.
Let me be clear: I am not a serious sneakerhead (I’m more partial to vintage sweatshirts). But it doesn’t take a genius to recognize the irony of a collab between a shoe designer (the object that is responsible for covering the feet that take you places, though not right now of course) and an application optimized for our work-from-home times. In other words, it’s a fashion object that perfectly encapsulates the absurdity of the moment. How 2020.
But I digress. One thing fashion shows don’t highlight is the supposed new normal: party on bottom and business on top. For all those video chats and zoom meetings we are now in the habit of wearing business or business casual on top and sweats (or just plain underwear) on bottom. Basically, WFH has us all weary of actual pants. Add virtual job interviews to the mix, which are still happening despite the dismal economy, and the whole thing is a recipe for disaster, like the time I poured lemon juice into my milk-based banana smoothie.
So I thought now would be a good time (you’re not doing anything, right?) to run through a refresher on interview dress codes that specifically factor in the virtual nature of the interviews themselves. And yes, it will require pants.

Many universities provide scholarships and financial aid to transfer students. In most cases, transfer students are considered for different types of financial aid, such as transfer-specific scholarships and grants. Always make sure to request to speak with a financial aid specialist at your target university to go over all your options and remember to pay attention to all FAFSA and other financial aid deadlines.

While you may have aced all your community college courses, remember that entering a four-year institution can be like starting over in a completely different environment. It’s not that community college courses are any easier (hint: they’re not), but you may have gotten comfortable and established a steady routine that helped you stay focused as you got more comfortable. Allow yourself that time at your new university – it’s a new school, so let yourself develop your new routine for success.
