By Noah Nelson
Coastline’s Esports Club offers a lot more than just esports.
Strategic team cooperation, play-by-play adaptable combat, and no holds barred battle royals— esports brings a lot to the table. But, at Coastline College’s Esports Club, high-octane esports fun isn’t the only thing on the menu. As a member of the club myself, I can confirm that a solid friend group, study hall, and casual gaming are all beneficial perks of being a member of the Esports Club.

Aside from the obvious opportunity of forging new friendships, clubs can attract a wide variety of personalities, giving you the chance to learn how to interact with different personalities you might come across later on in the workplace.
Celebrate and Honor Latinx History, Culture, and Contributions:
What is Hispanic Heritage Month?
National Hispanic Heritage Month honors the culture, heritage, and contributions of Hispanic Americans each year. The event began in 1968 when Congress deemed the week including September 15th and 16th National Hispanic Heritage Week to celebrate the contributions and achievements of the diverse cultures within the Hispanic community.
The dates were chosen to commemorate two key historic events: Independence Day, honoring the formal signing of the Act of Independence for Costa Rica, El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras, and Nicaragua (September 15, 1821), and Mexico’s Independence Day, which denotes the beginning of the struggle against Spanish control (September 16, 1810). It was not until 1988 that the event was expanded to a month-long period in order to include El Dia de la Raza on October 12th, which celebrates the influences of the people who came after Christopher Columbus and the multicultural, multi-ethnic society that evolved as a result. The month also includes Chile’s Independence Day on September 18th (El Dieciocho) and Belize’s Independence Day on September 21th.
Share Your Story!
Coast College District Survey
National Hispanic Heritage Month is coming up! The Coast District will be highlighting students, staff, and faculty, that would like to share their stories and successes through a district-wide survey. Those that choose to participate in the survey can expect to have their responses used across various mediums (social media, newsletters, online) throughout Hispanic Heritage Month (September 15th- October 15th). Complete the interest form to participate and share your story!

Friday Feature: Managing Your Mental Health Post-Covid-19
By Jennifer West
Coastline College's mental health therapists share their tips and tricks for managing post-COVID-19 anxiety.
After spending a year and a half inside, it feels so good to finally step out into the sunshine and take a deep breath of fresh air. Sometimes I forget I spent the last year and a half sitting in my house under stay-at-home orders. I got used to wearing my mask everywhere and standing six feet apart from others. I don’t know about you, but now that restrictions have lessened, and things are opening up, I’m starting to feel a bit of anxiety about going back to normal. I am vaccinated, but I still feel hesitant about “rejoining society.”
Luckily, I was able to reach out to the new Coastline College mental health therapists,
Nooshin Neshatian, Briana Hurst, and Cheyenne Smith gave some tips how to handle returning to normal as we come to what we can only hope for as the end of this pandemic. From going back to school to go going back to work, these tips can help you when dealing with the stress and anxiety that may come from dealing with a post-COVID-19 world.
Will Social Media Hurt Your College & Career Goals?
By Saul Rubin
We all have that one super cringe selfie. And that’s a best-case scenario. You may not realize it, but what you post on social media matters to the college & career of your dreams.
After being hired for my second internship I remember one of the assistants at the company, who’d helped hire me, make a comment about my Facebook account. It was benign, something along the lines of ‘you don’t post a lot.’ I was confused and I asked how she knew that; she replied that the company checks as many social media accounts as they can before they hire an intern. ‘We want to make sure we don’t hire any weirdos’ was how the assistant put it.
In my case it all worked out. But it does the raise the question: are colleges and potential employers checking out my sweet middle school photos of me with my band? Is social media, on top of everything else, another way for companies and colleges to guard against controversy and scandal?
The Short Answer...
…Yes, some colleges and most managers and recruiters will take a peek at your social media at some point in the admissions or hiring process. A survey put out by Kaplan Test Prep found in 2018 that approximately 25% of colleges surveyed checked applicants’ social media profiles. In many cases, students included links to their social media right with their application, making it easy for the school to check. At other times, anonymous tipsters (spooky) alerted colleges to applicants’ troubling behavior online.

Friendships are great, but friends whose interests align with yours – such as your career goals or majors of studies – are also a great resource to have while in school. Sometimes you’ll face issues or stress that only someone else with similar interests will understand. Fellow club members are great candidates for this kind of relationship.
