Why Federal Work-Study at Coastline College is Incredible
By Noah Nelson
I started college in Spring 2018 part-time while working at a fast-food restaurant full time. My life wasn’t going in the direction that I wanted it to go and a job opportunity opened up for me to be a Fire Testing Technician at a fire/security/healthcare technologies company. I quit school and worked there for two years, climbing my way up to Warehouse Manager and Office Administrator. I thought that I could live my life without going to college and be happy, which is true for some people, but wasn’t for me. I felt unfulfilled in my job and couldn’t imagine working there or at a job similar to it for the rest of my life. So, at the start of the COVID-19 pandemic, I chose to quit my financially stable job to pursue my dream of becoming an entertainment journalist, starting my journey at Coastline College.
My name is Noah Nelson and I am a Coastline College graduate and Esports Writer for Coastline’s Esports Club. Not only is Coastline College an incredible school completely invested in each individual student’s future, but Coastline College’s Federal Work-Study is a phenomenal program that gives college students the opportunity to start on the path toward their dream career that I will forever be grateful for.

Top Five Careers Coastline Grads Are Exploring…
By Saul Rubin
Put yourself in a bakery; a fine patisserie or one of those rustic corner spots that turn out fresh loaves, still dusted with flour, like nobody’s business. It doesn’t matter which. Now you’re there; you’re looking at the display; you see delectable eclairs, dainty tarts, unctuous cookies, whole cakes, those fresh-baked loaves, not to mention a line-up of coffees, sandwiches, and drinks on the board above you. The choices are staggering. A chocolate croissant sounds and looks good, but so does the lemon poppy seed muffin you find yourself pining for—So what do you pick?
College is a bit like that. The options abound for not just where you could attend, but also what you could study once you get there. Your relatives and friends may think they know a thing or two and offer you advice on what major or field you should enter, but don’t succumb to peer pressure when you make a decision. Do your own research and consider what career is right for you. We just published a primer on How to Change Careers and I recommend a read of that too.
As part of your research, you should know what fields are popular, not because they seem cool or whatever, but because they show growth, benefits, & indicate what other intelligent people in similar shoes as yours are choosing to do. Thus, it helps narrow down the possibilities so you can better decide. Because the only thing worse than picking the wrong item at a bakery is picking no item at all and heading home hungry. Without further ado, here are the top five careers our grads are exploring…
Friday Feature: Teaching the Teachers with Dr. Sharon Chard-Yaron
By Saul Rubin
Dr. Sharon Chard-Yaron has always wanted to be a teacher. But not just any teacher. She “wanted to be a cool teacher.” What does that mean? It means a teacher who inspires their students, but also knows their students. There’s nothing less cool than not caring or being informed about the people you guide and interact with, online or in-person, every day. “Having a personal effect on someone’s life” as a teacher, that’s cool.
An example of an uncool teacher: Mrs. Musan, Dr. Sharon’s third grade math instructor. Mrs. Musan “beat your hands with a ruler” if you missed your multiplication tables. Ouch. Sharon chuckles as she tells this story, acknowledging that this kind of behavior wouldn’t fly in a classroom (or probably anywhere) anymore. But back then, parents would simply say “‘the teacher is always right.’” That environment in third grade instilled a fear of math in Sharon that persisted all the way to her first statistics class for her Doctorate.
As a kid, Sharon was inspired by these kinds of teachers, the hit your hand with a ruler kind, and by the kinds of teachers who were nothing like that. That she was inspired by the worst as well as the best makes sense when you meet Sharon. And it makes sense when you consider what teaching means. Education is about improving. Sharon saw that education, that teachers, could be better; that classrooms didn’t have to be places where children felt afraid or pressured. And so she resolved to become a teacher, a cool teacher.

More Than Just Esports: Coastline College’s Esports Club
By Noah Nelson
Coastline’s Esports Club offers a lot more than just esports.
Strategic team cooperation, play-by-play adaptable combat, and no-holds-barred battle royals— esports brings a lot to the table. But, at Coastline College’s Esports Club, high-octane esports fun isn’t the only thing on the menu. As a member of the club myself, I can confirm that a solid friend group, study hall, and casual gaming are all beneficial perks of being a member of the Esports Club.
Esports Tournaments
For starters, let’s talk esports tournaments. After all, the point of an esports club is to compete in esports games. Just last month, Coastline College’s VALORANT and Rocket League teams competed in the OC County Fair Imaginology Esports Events. Though both teams lost, the experience they gained from their defeats was invaluable, and they had a blast competing. Coastline’s Esports Club, although still a club and not an official team, is always looking for their proving grounds. If you enjoy VALORANT, Rocket League, Call of Duty, Smash Bros., and League of Legends, among other esports games, join the Coastline College Esports Club.
