The Same Quality Education in Half the Time!
Coastline's 2nd 8-week session is just around the corner! While 8-week courses are much faster-paced, you finish them in half the time. They're a great way to get those general education courses done quickly that you may not have wanted to spend all semester on. Or perhaps you didn't get the class you wanted when the semester started? Many popular courses that might have filled up at the semester start also have 8-week offerings!
8-week classes start on Monday, April 4th, so don't wait and register today!
From the Coastline Blog:
Five Tips for Managing 8-Week Courses
By Saul Rubin
You’re busy. How do I know that? It’s not a difficult guess. Most of us are fairly busy nowadays; people to talk to, things to do, etc. Yes, the pandemic has slowed us all down, but in general, most people move at a breakneck pace. That means, even if you want to go back to school or continue in school, you may not have the time. Enter the 8-week course.
The 8-week course is the best way to get through a lot, in a little. You’re going through an entire course load in just two months. It sounds stressful, and indeed it can be, but it’s also a great way to learn if you’re in a hurry. And aren’t we all. But how to properly manage it? A course in 8-weeks is unfamiliar to many students unless they’ve taken summer school (in high school). It’s a new prospect to tailor learning strategies and try to fit them into a new time window. Besides, everyone prepares and studies differently, thus making the task of giving all-purpose advice a bit more difficult. That being said, there are a few tips for how to mentally approach your 8-week courses to take full advantage of the excellent learning opportunity they afford.

Ada was the daughter of romantic poet, Lord Byron, and his wife, Anna Isabella-Byron. Her mathematical talent shone through in her early life, and her skills and interest in machines lead to a working relationship with Charles Babbage. Babbage was the inventor of the “Analytical Engine”, a complicated device that was never actually created but resembled the elements of a modern computer. As a result of her work on the project, Ada is often referred to as the “world’s first computer programmer”. It was Lovelace's notes on the Analytical Engine that Alan Turing used as a form of inspiration for his work on the first modern computer in the 1940s.

Break Out the Purple for Women!
But Why Purple?
The 2022 Women’s History theme, “Providing Healing, Promoting Hope,” is both a tribute to the ceaseless work of caregivers and frontline workers during this ongoing pandemic and also a recognition of the thousands of ways that women of all cultures have provided both healing and hope throughout history.
To kick off Women's History Month we invite you to join the Coastline community on Tuesday, March 8th in wearing purple to celebrate! Break out your best purple during your Zoom classes and meetings or snap a quick #WomensHistoryMonth selfie and tag us on social media!
But what does wearing the color purple mean?
Purple combines the calm stability of blue and the fierce energy of red. The color purple is often associated with royalty, nobility, luxury, power, and ambition. Purple also represents meanings of wealth, extravagance, creativity, wisdom, dignity, grandeur, devotion, peace, pride, mystery, independence, and magic.

After two years of being closed to the public, Coastline Art Gallery in Newport Beach is hosting its first art show, An Orderly Line? This three-person exhibition focuses on one of the seven elements of art, line. A basic gesture that has the power to be a complex tool of expression. The phrase, an orderly line, comes from the first half of a poster promoting safety procedures used for civil defense air raid drills, “An Orderly Line Is a Safe Line!.” This slogan was a product of the WPA’s efforts to ease congestion and assure that all members of the community found refuge in the event of a disturbance.
Reflecting back on the last few years, the idea that a line can move from A to B seems anything but simple. As art imitates life, the question is, can a line truly be orderly?
The exhibition is available for viewing in-person at the Coastline Art Gallery now through March 19th!

Undeniably famous in the tech world, Rear Admiral Grace M. Hopper was an esteemed computer scientist and one of the first computer programmers to work on the Harvard Mark I. Her work led to the development of COBOL, an early programming language we are still used to this day. In 1947, she recorded the world's first-ever real computer bug, and it is also said that she coined the phrase: “it is often easier to ask for forgiveness than to ask for permission.”

6 Reasons Why Joining
a Student Club is Worth It
By Amy Severns
If there is one invaluable commodity in the life of a college student, many may think it’s money – the “broke college student” persona is, sadly, still far from just a stereotype. However, I have to argue that more so than money, there is one thing even more valuable which college students just never seem to have enough of – time. Between juggling course loads, often multiple jobs, family responsibilities, and the few glimpses of self-care moments one might try and remember to squeeze in, time is something a college student is constantly in need of more.
Given that, it seems a bit of a conundrum that one of the most valuable commodities that can be found within the college experience are student clubs and organizations. Nearly as valuable as the knowledge and skills gained from a student’s courses, the benefits of joining a student club can affect a student’s future in a variety of ways, for years beyond their college career. So how on earth can college students - who are already short on time - manage to take on another responsibility by joining a student club, and why should they even try? Let’s break it down – here are five reasons why getting involved and joining a student club could enhance not just your college experience, but your future, too, along with a few tips and tricks on how to make time for it.
Toxic Positivity's Effect
on Mental Health
By Nayeli Hernandez
Today we are going to talk about something that is starting to gather more and more attention on social media platforms: Toxic Positivity.
What is Toxic Positivity?
Toxic positivity is the belief that no matter how serious or difficult a situation is, one feels the need to maintain a positive mindset. It's a "Good Vibes Only" approach to life. This effect in turn causes an individual to avoid and/or ignore situations at hand which ends up hurting them more later on. All in all, toxic positivity is the excessive and ineffective belief that one needs to be in a happy, optimistic state across all situations.
When does positivity become harmful to your health?
Though the concept of someone being positive is not a bad thing, it’s the belief that you should ONLY focus on the good and ignore everything that disturbs that mentality. This toxic mentality of positivity becomes harmful when it’s insincere, forceful, or delegitimizes real feelings of anxiety, fear, sadness, or hardship. In this case, it’s not healthy positivity, it’s toxic. The process of toxic positivity results in the denial, minimization, and invalidation of the authentic human emotional experience.

The event raised $2,700 earmarked for laptops so each student can take Coastline Digital Media courses, earn early college credit and stackable certificates. The group plans to host future events like this one.

Women Of Color are Changing the Esports Game
By Jennifer West
I always knew what Esports is. Esports is competitive online gaming. People from all over the world can face off in popular games like League of Legends, Rainbow Six Siege, and Valorant and if they're good enough, they win money. These esports events are watched by millions of people all over the world and many of these streamers have built up a fanbase on services like Twitch. When I think of esports however, the first thing that comes to my mind is men. It seems like video games and all things that have to do with video games are geared toward the male demographic. That is no longer the case.
As a woman, I never thought Esports catered to me. Women only make up five percent of the esports industry and women leagues and teams are almost non-existent. All I ever heard about were popular male Twitch streamers. After having the chance to interview Esports Expert Katherine Amoukhteh and Dean of Instruction Dana Emerson, my perspective on Esports completely changed.

Hedy was a self-taught inventor and film actress, who was awarded a patent in 1942 for her "secret communication system", designed with the help of the composer George Antheil. This frequency hopping system was intended as a way to set radio-guided torpedos off course during the war, but the idea eventually inspired Wi-Fi, GPS, and Bluetooth technology commonly used today.
